If a student made more than $600 in interest payments on federal, institutional, and/or private student loans during a calendar year, the student may be eligible to deduct a portion of the interest paid on their federal tax return.
If an individual’s interest payments met the $600 threshold, the 1098-E form will be provided by the student loan servicer (the entity processing the student loan payments).
The student’s servicer may send the 1098-E via U.S. Postal Service or electronically.
For student loan servicer information, visit the National Student Loan Data System or call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243 TTY 1-800-730-8913).
